Loretta Siegel - Silk
Artist
"I have always been interested in art. A Van Gogh book, a gift from
my mother, was a treasured childhood possession. Books on sculpture,
statues, paintings and drawings were an important part of my early
education. School trips to the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim
and The Metropolitan Museum in New York City were always eagerly
anticipated events full of magic, excitement and great beauty. Art
galleries and museums are still an integral part of my life. A visit
to one Of them is never undertaken lightly. Rather, it is an opportunity
to explore, to learn, to be challenged.
I am a silk artist. The medium I have chosen is silk...soft, supple,
strong, sensual silk imported from the Orient. The technique I use
originated in France thousands of years ago. It incorporates a resist
which is derived from the rubber tree in India. The dyes are French
and come in a myriad of hues. Once applied, the dyes become permanent,
maintaining their brilliance and clarity forever.
Through my paintings, I try to convey the beauty of the universe,
the magic of our natural surroundings and the enigmatic spirit which
inhabits every fiber of our being.
Years of hiking and mountain climbing have made me acutely aware
of the fragility of our environment and of the awesome majesty of
our lakes, mountains and forests. I hope that my paintings make
you feel a sense of awe, respect or wonderment at the world around
us."
